POLZEATH ARTIFICIAL REEF
Polzeath is aiming to transform itself into Europe’s premier surfing venue with one of the most ambitious projects ever undertaken in the UK, work has begun on the new 2 year project to construct an artificial reef at Polzeath.
Its aim is to try and create the ultimate surfing wave! When completed, the reef will push waves upwards, improving their size, length and quality, it will also dramatically increase the number of good surfing days. The new reef will not just create bigger and stronger waves for pro surfers, but it will produce a range of wave sizes across the width of the bay, so there will still be areas for novice and intermediate surfers and an area for bathers and recreational body-boarders.
There are three phases to the project, the first is to blast some of the cliffs away at Pentire, to allow the Northerly swell to enter the bay without its power being weakened by the rocks. The second phase will focus on creating the two ‘A’ shaped reef peaks with massive sand bags in the middle of the Bay, these will create two sizes of waves, one for experts and one for intermediates. Beginner surfers will continue to use the beach breaks. And the third phase, to be confirmed, will focus on an area for Canoeists and Body-boards further up the Estuary.
On completion in 2011, the Polzeath Reef will be a showpiece for world surfing and it will become the one of the top surfing destinations in the UK, if not the World”.
