Great to see Ben Fogle in Rock with his son Ludo on ITV’s Countrywise this week.
It seems Ben Fogle knows Rock from memorable childhood holidays. He’s clearly keen to introduce Ludo to the magic of the area. His sailing lesson with Rock Sailing and Powerboat Centre in the sheltered river Camel Estuary is a great way to get on the water. There are many other opportunities to get on a boat on the Camel Estuary, from a leisurely cruise on the Jubilee Queen to a powerboat trip on the Padstow speedboats.
There is no shortage of rockpooling opportunities around the area, and nothing like catching crabs, small fish, starfish and shrimps to make children and adults smile. Like many thousands of rockpoolers before him Ludo got to learn how to pick up a crab without getting nipped. Daymer Bay and Polzeath beach, just around the coast, have brilliant rockpools and there is no shortage of places to buy a bucket and net.
Crab lining at Rock is best done from the wall opposite Rock Sailing and Powerboat Centre as shown in the image above. Take the foot ferry to Padstow and in the summer you’ll see many kids and families crab lining off Padstow Harbour walls. Crab lines are widely available from local shops including Clock Garage in Rock.
